Obvious answer is rather obvious, but it's because many drivers are idiots. Also because the position of the 112V socket is almost always near or in the center console, and the cord isn't long enough to allow positioning it anywhere else.

Best solution is, of course, to have it hardwired to the battery and mounted where the driver's side A-pillar meets the dash. Or get an OSSO mount (I got one, recommended by a fellow Oppo, it's excellent) so as to position it on top of the dash.

I put mine high beside the rearview. the cord is on the other side of the windshield. I find it is easier to glance at and is out of the way more than if it was near the bottom of the dash. Not having to really take my eyes from the look around pattern is always good.
